What it is:
A calculator for mutual fund SIPs that increase annually.
What it calculates:
The terminal wealth, total invested capital, wealth gain, and annual instalment schedule.

Key Assumptions

  • Instalments are stepped up once every 12 months at the anniversary.
  • Monthly returns compound using nominal annual rate divided by 12.
  • Returns are illustrative assumptions, not guaranteed forecasts.

How it works

A step-up (or top-up) SIP automatically increases your monthly investment at each annual anniversary. This aligns your investments with annual salary increments and career progression.

The calculator simulates exact month-by-month cash flows using the annuity-due convention, where each instalment is invested at the beginning of the month and compounds for that month.

At the start of each new 12-month period, the monthly instalment is stepped up by the percentage or fixed rupee amount you specified.

Over long investment horizons (10 to 20 years), even a modest 10% annual step-up can double your final corpus compared to a flat SIP of the same starting amount.

Formula

P_y = P_1 x (1 + s)^(y-1) | Balance_m = (Balance_{m-1} + Instalment) x (1 + r/12)

P_y
= monthly instalment in year y
P_1
= starting monthly instalment in year 1
s
= annual step-up rate as a decimal (e.g. 0.10 for 10%)
r
= expected annual return as a decimal
m
= month index from 1 to total months

For fixed rupee increases, P_y = P_1 + (y - 1) x fixedAmount.

Frequently asked questions

What is a Step-Up SIP in mutual funds?
A step-up (or top-up) SIP is a facility where you increase your monthly contribution by a pre-determined percentage (e.g., 10%) or fixed rupee amount (e.g., ₹1,000) every year. It allows your investment to grow in line with your rising income.
How much difference does a 10% annual step-up make?
A huge difference over long horizons. For example, a flat ₹10,000 monthly SIP at 12% over 15 years yields ~₹50.4 Lakhs on ₹18 Lakhs invested. With a 10% annual step-up, your corpus grows to ~₹88.7 Lakhs on ₹38.1 Lakhs invested — creating over ₹38 Lakhs in additional wealth.
Can I choose a fixed rupee increase instead of a percentage?
Yes. This calculator lets you toggle between percentage step-up (e.g. 10%) and fixed rupee step-up (e.g. ₹1,000/year). Most mutual fund platforms and RTAs (CAMS, KFintech) support both modes.
Is there a limit on how high my SIP can step up?
Your mutual fund auto-debit (OTM / e-NACH mandate) has a maximum daily limit set when you registered it with your bank. Ensure your bank mandate limit is high enough to accommodate future stepped-up instalments.
