EPF rules apply to all non-government establishments with 20 or more employees under the Employees' Provident Funds and Miscellaneous Provisions Act, 1952.
What it is:
A retirement savings projection tool based on the Employees' Provident Fund Scheme, 1952.
What it calculates:
Retirement corpus, cumulative employee and employer contributions, annual interest earned, and yearly progression.

Key Assumptions

  • Employee contribution is 12% of basic salary.
  • Employer contribution is split between EPF and EPS as per statutory caps.
  • Interest is compounded annually based on monthly running balances at the official EPFO rate.
  • Standard superannuation age of 58 years.

How it works

The employee contributes 12% of their Basic Salary (+ DA) towards their EPF account every month.

The employer also contributes 12%, which is split into two parts: 3.67% goes directly to the EPF account, while 8.33% goes to the Employee Pension Scheme (EPS). EPS is capped at ₹1,250/month (8.33% of the ₹15,000 statutory wage ceiling). Any employer excess is added back to EPF.

Interest is calculated monthly on the running month-end balance, but compounded and credited to your EPF account once at the end of each financial year (March 31st).

The accumulated EPF corpus and interest are completely tax-free upon withdrawal after completing 5 continuous years of service.

Formula

Monthly Contribution = Employee 12% + Employer EPF Share; Annual Interest = Sum of (Monthly Running Balances x r / 12); Closing Corpus = Opening Balance + Total Contributions + Annual Interest

Employee Share
= 12% of basic salary + dearness allowance
Employer EPF
= 3.67% of basic + excess beyond EPS ₹1,250 cap
r
= Annual EPFO interest rate (currently 8.25% p.a.)
Closing Corpus
= Total accumulated balance carried forward to next financial year

EPFO calculates interest on monthly running balances and compounds annually on March 31st.

Frequently asked questions

What is the current EPFO interest rate?
The Central Board of Trustees (CBT) of the EPFO declared an interest rate of 8.25% p.a. for EPF accumulations.
How is the employer 12% contribution divided between EPF and EPS?
Of the employer's 12% contribution, 8.33% is directed to the Employee Pension Scheme (EPS), subject to a statutory wage ceiling of ₹15,000 per month (maximum ₹1,250/month). The remaining balance (3.67% of basic plus any amount above the ₹1,250 cap) is credited to your EPF account.
Is EPF interest taxable?
EPF interest is tax-free up to an employee annual contribution of ₹2,50,000 (or ₹5,00,000 if there is no employer contribution). Interest earned on employee contributions exceeding ₹2.5 Lakhs in a financial year is taxable as income from other sources under Section 10(11)/(12).
When can I withdraw my EPF corpus tax-free?
EPF withdrawals are completely tax-free if you have completed 5 continuous years of service. If withdrawn before 5 years, the accumulated employer contribution and interest become taxable, and TDS applies under Section 192A.
